Overview of the La Liga soccer team Real Madrid

Will the Blonde Angel fly or spiral into Calderon’s Cauldron?

The centre stage was set on the 9th July 2007, as the blonde angel’ Bernd Schuster once again entered the hearts of the Madrid fans, but this time as the coach. For the hard-pleasing Bernabeu fans it’s another day, the same story, no sorrow, no regrets. The gates of the transfer market have opened three weeks ago and the majestic grandeurs of Madrid have run a riot in the market. The face of Los Merengues is changing as the aging players are shipped out and a younger, robust, fast-paced, skilful, attacking-minded, exuberant team is being built. The new signings include Dudek, Pepe, Metzelder, Drenthe, Sneijder and Saviola whilst Soldado returns from an annual season loan with Osasuna. However there are major qualms about this new look squad. Eyebrows are raised whether Schuster will stamp down his authority on a squad which is still being refurbished as well as where are these masses of new players going to fit in? The high barrier has been set by Schuster’s predecessor, the hard nosed Italian tactician, Capello. After three long, harsh, barren years Capello balanced the team to some extent and restored hope that the team are not headed in a bottomless pit but are clinging onto the contemporary great teams by winning the La Liga crown. Over these barren years (2003-2006) Los Blancos were criticised for not having a stable defence at all, as the Spanish beliefs in football is attack to defend.’ The only problem being what if the attack is not as majestic, leaving the team stranded, losing? Ultimately this means they are lost, demotivated with a clash of egos and anger as the slight brink of pressure begins to set. When Real Madrid employed Capello, the air was modestly sweet as he was the new hopeful to guide them away from the empty mediocre seasons. He certainly did mark his authority over the team, most infamously demonstrated in the freeze-out Beckham’ saga which he later regretted.

Calderon, the newly elected president was happy he achieved his own goal, to employ him. Capello stated at the start of the season, “It’s all about getting results.” Indeed he got the results but the board hypocritically sacked him even though silverware was captured. A half hearted statement by Mijatovic, the current sporting director stated we need a more enthusiastic
